The square-rigged beauty, the HMS Bounty, is most well known for a maritime mutiny that took place over 200 years ago. The mutiny occurred on April 28 1789 and was made famous by books, films, and songs. Led by Fletcher Christian against the captain, William Bligh, the mutiny ended in Bligh and 18 loyals being cast adrift. Typical mutinies in the Royal Navy involved sailors refusing to obey particular orders until conditions were met, and most commonly took place in port. The mutiny on the Bounty, involving no demands from the crew, the seizure of a ship by violence, and setting the captain and loyal crew members adrift, was extremely unusual.
