The U.S. warship “Old Ironsides” was made from all-American timber from Maine and Georgia, and armed with all-American artillery made in Rhode Island. First launched in Boston in 1779, the U.S.S. Constitution was put to sea in 1798. During the 1790s, the U.S.S. Constitution defended American commerce against the French havoc in the Caribbean. Then in 1803, President Jefferson ordered her to protect American vessels against Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean. After returning to the United States, the U.S.S. Constitution was named the flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron. The Constitution’s new captain, Isaac Hull, took her to sea in 1810. Two years later she engaged and defeated the HMS Guerriere, the first in a grand succession of victories in the War of 1812. It was during this intense battle that the Constitution’s crew, astounded at how British cannonballs were simply bouncing off her hull, cried out - "Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!" giving her the now famous moniker, “Old Ironsides.”
