HMS Victory Painted Wood Model Tall Ships

Features

  • The HMS Victory Painted Model #16133 measures 38"L x 12"W x 32"H.

  • This model is shipped fully assembled and ready to be displayed.

  • This wood model ship comes with a high quality, conditioned wood base complete with its own brass name plate.

  • We rely on extensive research -- various pictures, original plans, drawings and digital imaging -- to build this HMS Victory model to scale.

  • All of our tall ship models are built from the hull up by experienced master artisans, not from any sort of kit. To create the subtle details and contours of the deck and hull, plank-on-frame construction is employed. This requires hundreds of hours of painstaking, hand-wrought work.

  • The highest quality rare woods (e.g. ebony, rosewood, blackwood, mahogany, jackwood and sycamore) are used to construct all of our wood model boats. They are subjected to specific seasoning procedures to ensure that models will withstand severe climate changes and will never warp or split.

  • The detailed, hand-stitched sails of every wood model ship we offer are constructed of fine linen. The detailed riggings and linings are also of linen, and are painstakingly fastened by hand.

  • Ornaments and decorations (e.g. cannons, portholes, anchors, dials and wheels among other details) are sculpted of brass, chrome and other metals.

  • Skilled builders and artisans are responsible for the construction of every one of our handcrafted wooden model ships. To create a sturdy, perfectly aligned, built-to-scale masterpiece, each model’s frame and hull have to be precisely assembled. Narrow pieces of wood are cut into individual planks and then fastened one-by-one to the frame of the ship’s hull. When the frame planking is finished, individual pieces of wood are then fastened to the exterior of the hull, finalizing this assiduous process.

  • Each scale model ship is micro-sanded a number of times to ensure maximal uptake for paint and varnish. Each time the model is micro-sanded, a layer of primer, paint and varnish is applied. This time-consuming re-application and layering process is what gives our models their realistic sheen.

  • Each model ship is inspected at various steps of manufacturing and shipment to ensure the highest quality and most historical accuracy possible for your investment.

History

The H.M.S. Victory displaced over 3500 tons, and measured 226 feet in length and 51 feet abeam. Her hull was sheathed in copper to guard against barnacles. In a stiff breeze, she would billow 36 sails totaling four acres of canvas, and plough the waves at 10 knots. In weather fair or foul, the Victory was a fortress stocked with 35 tons of powder and 120 tons of shot. She possessed the capacity and endurance to remain at sea for up to six months at a time. Commissioned in 1778, the H.M.S. Victory had almost 30 years of embattled service at the time of Trafalgar. She is a veteran of many hard-won naval confrontations. On October 12, 1805, one of the most momentous battles in European history broke out off the coast of Cape Trafalgar, Spain. The combined fleets of France and Spain led by Napoleon the Great invaded England as a massive and powerful navy. They were thwarted by the supremacy of British sea power. The Victory has maintained a name for herself ever since. Honored and preserved over the years, she rests now at Portsmouth, England as a never-to-be-forgotten symbol of loyalty, courage and devotion to duty.

The momentous Battle of Trafalgar began on Oct. 21, 1805. During this battle, the HMS Victory, led by Lord Nelson, defeated the invading French Armada led by Napoleon the Great. A 100-gun First Rate ship designed by Sir Thomas Slade, the HMS Victory was well-suited to be Lord Nelson’s flagship.

During the Battle of Trafalgar, the HMS Victory sailed directly into the midst of the French Armada and divided in two. Rudder destroyed, sails full of holes, and with an injured mast, the HMS Victory came straight on, cannons ablaze. As the HMS Victory lacerated the enemy’s line, she took great punishment, but her retribution was greater and the HMS Victory left destruction in its wake.

Suffering mortal wounds, Lord Nelson led the British to one of the greatest victories in nautical history.

The HMS Victory is the sole surviving 18th Century warship left on the face of the planet, and is revered as one of the most prominent and decorated of all warships. Honored and preserved over the years, she rests now at Portsmouth, England, a never-to-be-forgotten symbol of loyalty, courage, and devotion to duty.
